Author

Names of authors and editors in Inspec appear surname first, followed by initials. The names of all authors (up to 400) of a multi-authored publication may be searched and will appear in a record.

This field also includes the names of patent assignees or organizations that issued dissertations or reports.


Guidelines for Entering Author Names

Example

Use upper, lower, or mixed case.

Lee or lee is the same as LEE.

Truncate after the first initial. Authors may or may not use a second or third initial.

Carter G* finds Carter, G.; Carter, G.M.; Carter, G.W.

Carter GW or Carter G W matches Carter, G.W.

Enter a surname followed by a space and an asterisk to find all authors with that surname.

Parkins * (note the space between Parkins and the asterisk) finds Parkins A.; Parkins A.S.; Parkins, E.; Parkins, E.J.; Parkins, R.N.; and so on.

Parkins alone finds the same names as Parkins *, however, it may also find additional records where Parkins appears without any initials.

Parkins* finds every name that Parkins * finds, as well as Parkinson, D.W.; Parkinson, J.; Parkinson, S.; and so on.

Use the asterisk in the middle of an author's name to find variant spellings.

Hof*man* finds Hofman, Hofmann, Hoffman, and Hoffmann.
Separate two or more names by the search operators AND, OR, and NOT.

Heuer A* AND Vogel M* finds records in which the names Heuer A. and Vogel, M. both appear.

Heuer A* OR Vogel M* finds records in which either Heuer, A. or Vogel, M. (or both Heuer, A. and Vogel, M.) appear.

Heuer A* NOT Vogel M* finds records in which Heuer, A. appears but not Vogel, M.

Search for surnames containing particles with and without a space after the particle.

De Marco A* OR DeMarco A*

Surnames containing an apostrophe should be searched with and without the apostrophe.

O'Hara M* OR OHara M*

Search for variants of names that contain diacritical marks in the original. Diacritical marks are not searchable.

The name Schröder may appear in the database as Schroder or Schroeder. Search for both variants:

Schroder OR Schroeder

Asian names appear in the database exactly as they do in the source document. The author Zhuang Jun may appear in the database as Zhuang Jun, Zhang Jun, Jun Zhuang, Jun Zhang, Zhuang J., Zhang J., or Jun Z. It is advisable to search for all variations on Asian names.

Zhuang Jun OR Zhang Jun OR Jun Zhang OR Jun Zhuang OR Zhuang J or Zhang J OR Jun Z

The name of an organization may be abbreviated or spelled out in full.

Also, the name of a corporate or institutional author may take the place of a list of author names if the number of author names is very large (that is, over 400).

OECD OR Organi* Econ* finds OECD, Organisation Economic Cooperation & Dev., Organization for economic co-operation and development.

Inst* Theor* finds Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, Inst. Theoretical Astrophys.

IEEE OR Inst* Elec* finds IEEE, Inst. Electr. & Electron. Eng.

  • To search for anonymous authors, enter anon in the Author field.

  • To search on the name AND, OR, NOT, and SAME, enclose the name in quotation marks. Example: "Or"
