Uncontrolled Index

Select Controlled Index (including Uncontrolled Index Terms) to search for uncontrolled index terms. The product retrieves all records that contain your search term(s) in either the Uncontrolled Indexing or the Controlled Indexing field within a Full Record.

Uncontrolled index terms are free-language words or phrases that are assigned by Inspec indexers. They provide a fuller description of the source document than that provided by the original title or by controlled index terms.

You will find uncontrolled index terms in records from 1971 to the present. You may even find them in the Inspec Thesaurus. These terms are not in archived data.

Controlled Index and Uncontrolled Index Examples

• Glaciology finds records in which glaciology is in the Controlled Indexing and/or Uncontrolled Indexing field within a record.

• Glaciology AND hydrology finds records in which both glaciology and hydrology are in the Controlled Indexing and/or Uncontrolled Indexing field within a record.

• Smart cards OR electronic money finds records in which either smart cards or electronic money (or both) is in the Controlled Indexing and/or Uncontrolled Indexing field within a record.

• Smart cards NOT electronic money finds records in which smart cards is in the Controlled Indexing field but excludes records in which electronic money is in the Controlled Indexing and/or Uncontrolled Indexing field within a record.
