Full Record Fields

Title

The title of an article, book, patent, or volume in a book series. If the title has been translated from a foreign title, then the title will appear within square brackets.

NCBI

This button opens a new browser Web page that contains a table with NCBI resource names that link to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). This option is only available for records for which a PubMedID exists.

Visit the NCBI Web site to look for more information on a genome or nucleotide. Explore human genome resources or bring up a Map Viewer to browse the human genome sequence. Enhance your research and find detailed information about molecular biology, computational biology, and more.

Foreign Title

A non-English title of an article, book, patent, or volume in a book series.

Author(s)

The author(s) of the article or book.

Note For documents from 2003 to the present, this field may also contain the author's e-mail address.

Corporate Author

The name of the organization that authored the document.

Editor(s)

The editor(s) of the book or book series.

Inventor(s) (Patent Records Only)

The name of the inventor(s) of the patent.

Source

The journal, book, or book chapter title followed by issue, part, supplement, page span, and publication date.

Series

The name of the series that the book was issued along with volume number or other sequential designation.

Abstract

Abstract from the source document.

Accession Number

The accession number is a unique identifying number for each record in the product. It consists of a product identification code, a product year, and an item number.

Document Type

The selected document type.

Note Some books and meeting documents are available in BIOSIS Previews.

Literature Type

The selected literature type.

Language

The selected language of the source document.

Medium

The medium in which the source document was published.

Note Applicable to records from 1998 to the present.

Meeting Information

The meeting title, location, and date.

Meeting Sponsor(s)

The name of the organization that supported or funded the scientific meeting named in the meeting title.

Note Records published before 1998 do not contain the name of the meeting sponsor.

Address

All author addresses. Author names are included if the source publication associates a particular author or group of authors with a particular address.

The address may contain some or all of the following information:

  • Department name
  • Corporate division
  • Institution
  • Organization name
  • Street address
  • City
  • Town
  • County
  • State
  • Province
  • Zip Code (or postal code)
  • Country

Publisher (Books Only)

The name and address of the publisher.

Patent Number (Patent Records Only)

The patent number is a unique identifier of a specific patent.

Patent Date Granted (Patent Records Only)

The date found on the front cover of the issue of the Official Gazette of the United States Patent and Trademark Office from which the patent information was taken.

Patent Country (Patent Records Only)

The name of the country in which the patent was granted.

Patent Assignee (Patent Records Only)

The name of the person or organization to which the rights to the patent have been assigned.

Patent Class (Patent Records Only)

The US Patent Class contains the class and subclass numbers of the United States Patent Classification Scheme that has been assigned to the source patent by the US Patent Office. The US Patent Class may be of variable length and may include numeric and alphabetic characters as well as embedded punctuation or spacing.

ISSN

The International Standard Serial Number is a unique eight-digit number that identifies periodical publications such as journals and electronic publications.

Note If a journal has both, then the print ISSN displays. Not every record in the product has an ISSN.

ISBN (Books Only)

The International Standard Book Number is a unique machine-readable identifier that marks a book unmistakably.

DOI

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) is a system for permanently identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment.

Major Concepts

Five-digit codes representing broad areas in the life sciences. A definition follows the numeric code.

Taxonomic Data

This table displays the following information.

Super Taxa: High-level Taxonomic terms that refer to broad categories of organisms. Super Taxa are presented in order from lowest level Taxa to highest.

Taxa Notes: Common names of broad groups of organisms and microorganisms discussed in the source document by the author.

Organism Classifier [Biosystematic Code]: Represents the organism classifier and the corresponding Biosystematic Code for an organism discussed in the source document by the author. The code may be followed by an asterisk (*), which is used to indicate the reporting of a new Taxon within the source document. In some instances, the asterisk may be replaced with -NEW.

The following fields are applicable for records from 1993 to the present.

Organism Name: The Organism Name contains the name of an organism as given by the author(s) in the source document.

Variant: A variant name for the organism. The variant may be a corrected spelling (from the author) or another common or species name.

Details: Other information such as gender of the organism, its developmental stage, and its role. It may also contain a fossil indicator and whether the organism is a new Taxon and its type.

Disease Data

This table may contain the following information.

Term: The name of a plant, animal, human disease, disorder, or pathological condition as discussed in the source document.

Variant: A variant name used to describe the disease term.

MeSH Term: The National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Heading term(s) for the disease term. The MeSH term is followed by the MeSH designation in parentheses.

Disease Affiliation: Terms to define common disease affiliations in order to provide a consistent search key.

Detail: Other explanatory details concerning the disease term as discussed in the source document by the author.

Chemical Data

For records published from 1969 to 1992, the Chemical Data table may contain two columns that display the Chemical Name and a five-to-nine digit CAS Registry No.

If your subscription includes archived records (1926 to 1968), then the Chemical Data table may also display the Chemical Name and a five-to-nine digit CAS Registry No.

For records published from 1993 to the present, the Chemical Data table may contain the following information.

Chemical Name: The name of a chemical or biochemical as described in the source document by the author.

Variant: A variant name for the chemical name.

CAS Registry No. A five-to-nine digit CAS Registry Number® assigned to the chemical name.

Drug Modifier: Terms that are used to define high-level categories of therapeutic actions of the chemical name as discussed in the source document by the author.

Details: Other information such as the chemical process and the chemical role, which describes the role of the chemical as discussed in the source document by the author.

Gene Name Data

This table may contain the following information.

Term: The name of a plant, animal, human disease, disorder, or pathological condition as discussed in the source document by the author.

Variant: A variant name for the Gene Name term.

Details: Additional terms used to describe details of the discussion of the gene as discussed in the source document by the author.

Sequence Data

This table may contain the following information.

Accession No. A unique number that identifies a molecular sequence as assigned by a data bank and as cited in the source document by the author. The number consists of alphabetic and numeric characters.

Data Bank: The name or acronym associated with the molecular sequence data bank to which the Sequence Accession No. refers as discussed in the source document by the author.

CAS Registry No. A five-to-nine digit CAS Registry Number® assigned to the chemical name.

Details: Indicates what type of molecular sequence is noted in Sequence Accession No.

Geographic Data

This table may contain the following information.

Term: A geographic term that describes a location or place as used in the source document by the author.

Variant: A variant name for the geographic term.

Geopolitical Terms: The names of geopolitical areas.

Zoogeographical Region: The location of the geographic term.

Geologic Time Data

This table may contain the following information.

Term: A geological time period or era mentioned in the source document by the author.

Classifier: A variant of the term that appears in the Term cell.

Detail: Other explanatory details concerning the geologic time term as discussed in the source document by the author.

Methods and Equipment Data

This table may contain the following information for records published from 1998 to the present.

Term: A term describing a method, apparatus, or scientific technique discussed in the source document by the author.

Variant: A variant name for the Methods and Equipment term.

Details: Information about the equipment, manufacturer or supplier, and the role of the term as discussed in the source document by the author.

Parts and Structures Data

This table may contain the following information.

Term: Components of organisms above the macromolecular level as discussed in the source document by the author.

Variant: A variant name for the Parts & Structure term.

Organ Systems: A high-level organ system of which the Parts & Structure term is a part.

Detail: Other explanatory details concerning the Parts & Structure term as discussed in the source document by the author.

Miscellaneous Descriptors

Additional subject terms assigned by indexers.
