Enter author names to search the names of authors and book editors.

Enter the last name first, followed by a space and up to five initials. Enter complete names or partial names using wildcards (* ? $). You may also enter last names without initials. Join multiple names with the Booleans (AND, OR, and NOT).

Names of authors and editors generally appear in the product as last name first, followed by up to five initials. For records of articles published in 2006 and later, you may see two versions of a name in the Full Record. For example: Diaz, G (Diaz, Gregorio).

The names of all authors of a multi-authored article may be searched and will appear in the article record.

Guidelines for Entering Author Names

Case

Enter names in upper, lower, or mixed case. Smith or smith is the same as SMITH.

Truncation

Enter a surname only. Truncate after the first initial. Authors may or may not use a second initial. Richard D. Cummings may appear as Cummings, RD or Cummings, R, depending on how his name appears in the original article.

• Cummings RD matches Cummings, RD
• Cummings R* matches Cummings, R; Cummings, RD; Cummings, RG; Cummings, RT; and so on.
• Parkins* matches Parkins, R; Parkins, AW; Parkinson, R; Parkinson, DY, and so on

Last Names with Spaces

Last names containing a space should be searched with and without the space.

• De Ville * OR Deville * finds authors whose last name is DeVille, De Ville, or de Ville.

Hyphens

Hyphens are treated as spaces, not searchable characters.

• Garcia Ojeda E* matches Garcia-Ojeda, E
• Garcia-Ojeda E* matches Garcia-Ojeda, E

Apostrophes

Apostrophes are treated as spaces, not searchable characters.

• O Rourke M OR O'Rourke M matches O'Rourke, M

Be sure to search for the name with the apostrophe and without the apostrophe (and without a space).

• ORourke M OR O Rourke M matches O'Rourke, M and ORourke, M

Booleans

If the name contains a Boolean, enclose the name in quotation marks.

• "Koechli OR" (or Koechli "OR") finds records of articles by Koechli OR.
• "Same" finds records of articles by Same-Ekobo A.

Author Finder

Use Author Finder to find variants of the same author name or to distinguish one author from another by field of research and/or address.

You access Author Finder by clicking the Author Finder link that appears under the Author field.

Author Index

Click the author index icon to access a list of author names that you can add to your query. Using the Author Index allows you to select the correct spelling or variant spellings of a name.

Search Tips

• To search for anonymous authors, enter anon in the Author field.

• To search on the name AND, OR, NOT, and SAME, enclose the name in quotation marks. Example: "Or"

Using Wildcards

• Symon* finds papers authored by Symons or Symonds.

• Ste*enson finds papers authored by Stevenson or Stephenson.

• H?ffman W* finds papers authored by Huffman WE or Hoffman WE.

• Frank$ P* finds papers authored by Frank P, Frank PM, Franks P, Franks PJ, and so on.

• De$Carlo R* finds papers authored by DeCarlo R or De Carlo R.
