Guidelines for Entering
Author Names
Enter the last name followed by first name or initial. It is advisable to truncate
after the first initial. Alternatively, use the author index to look up author
names.
- Harvey Roy matches Harvey, Roy.
- Harvey R* matches Harvey R.; Harvey, Rachel; Harvey, Ronald
W.; Harvey, Roy; etc.
Even though Zoological Record captures author names exactly as
they appear in the source publication, including full first names, it
is advisable to search for an author by truncating after the first initial
whenever possible. John E. Chandler may be represented in the database
as Chandler, J. E. or Chandler, John, or Chandler John E. Moreover, he
may have published under any of those names.
You can enter a last name without any first name or initials. For example:
-
Chandler finds Chandler, Chandler, P.J.; Chandler, Peter; Chandler,
Richard B.; Chandler-Morris, S.A.; and so on.
-
Parkins * (note the space between Parkins and the asterisk) matches
Parkins, J.; Parkins, C. S.; Parkins, Charles; Parkins, John R; etc.
-
Parkins* (note that no space between Parkins and the asterisk) matches
Parkins, D.; Parkins, J.J.; Parkinson, T.J.; Parkinson, Amy, E.;
Last names containing a space should be searched with and without the
space. For example, De Marco* OR DeMarco*.
Include hyphens and apostrophes when searching for names containing those
marks or replace them with spaces. For example:
- Etayo-Serna F* matches Etayo-Serna F* and Etayo Serna F*.
When searching for names of authors from Asian countries, it is a good idea
to search by both the last name (surname) and the given name, for example Peng
Y* OR Yanzhang P*.
