Web of Science®

What's New?

Web of Science is today‘s premier research database, helping you to quickly find, analyze, and share information in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. Designed for both novice and professional researchers, its streamlined search process makes it easy for you to quickly find and analyze past and present available research in your field.

What's New in the Current Release?

Refine Results - Funding Agencies Added

We have added the Funding Agencies category to the Refine Results function.

Analyze Results - Funding Agency and Grant Number Added

We have added two new fields to Analyze Results: Funding Agency and Grant Number.

Publication Type Change

We have replaced Publication Type C for all items in the Conference Proceedings citation indexes to make easier the export of records to EndNote, EndNote Web, and ResearcherID.

Follow the steps below to identify and replace records in your library using Publication Type J for Web of Science journal articles.

EndNote Users

    1. Open EndNote.

    2. Open he EndNote library.

    3. In the library display, sort the articles by Reference Type* and navigate to the Conference Proceedings references. Alternately, you can search your library for Conference Proceedings in the Reference Type field.

    4. Using this results list, search Web of Science and re-import the applicable records into your library.

    5. Delete the older records.

    6. If you have cited any of the records in a document, you will need to unformat the document and run Format Bibliography to update the citations and bibliography.

* Note that the Reference Type field must be selected for the library list display in Preferences.

EndNote Web Users

    1. Log into your EndNote Web account.

    2. Look for conference names in the list view and add each appropriate record to a group for easier tracking, such as the Quick List.

    3. Using this group, search Web of Science and re-import the applicable records into your library.

    4. Delete the original Conference Proceedings records.

    5. If you have cited any of the records in a document, you will need to unformat the document and run Format Bibliography to update the citations and bibliography.

ResearcherID Users

    1. Log into your ResearcherID account.

    2. For each record showing conference information in the publication list, search and add the same record.

    3. Delete the original Conference Proceedings records.

Importing Alerts into Thomson ResearchSoft Products

If you own one of the following Thomson Reuters products, then we recommend that you select the Field-Tagged format for your alerts to simplify the import process.

  • ProCite®
  • EndNote®
  • Reference Manager®

When in a Thomson Reuters product, when you import the text from a field-tagged alert, select the ISI-CE import filter. Note that some e-mail programs will remove line breaks. If your e-mail alert includes an option to retain or restore original line breaks, then always use this option before you import.

Changing the Interface Language

Chinese-speaking users can now view ISI Web of Knowledge products in Chinese Simplified. There are three ways you can select an interface language in your product database.

  1. Select the Chinese or English language link next to the View in text that appears at the bottom of any product page.

  2. Go to My Preferences and click the Select a Language link. The language you select appears whenever you sign in to your product. You must be a registered user and you must sign in to change the language using this method.

  3. You can configure your Web browser to display content in a particular language. The language you select by either of the above methods will override the browser language.

The first method has precedence over the second method. For example, if the language specified in My Preferences is English, but the View in language is Chinese, the instructions will appear in Chinese.

Be aware that English is the language of all databases that you can search in ISI Web of Knowledge. Consequently, search queries must always be in English. The results of your search are always in English.

The interface language you select affects only the instructions you see on ISI Web of Knowledge product pages and in Help.

System-Related Issues

Citation Map

You may encounter performance problems if you try to create a Citation Map for a record that has a large number of cited references and citing articles. This may be particularly true if you select the Second Generation option in both the Forward and Backward direction. If you encounter performance problems, we suggest that you revise your search and select only the Forward or Backward direction, but not both.

Setting the Language Script to Chinese Simplified

When using Internet Explorer 7.0, the values in drop-down boxes may display as braces ( [ ] ) when you view ISI Web of Knowledge product databases in Chinese Simplified format. To fix this issue, follow these instructions.

  1. Open Internet Explorer 7.0.
  2. Select the Tools menu / Internet Options.
  3. Click the Fonts button on the Internet Options dialog box.
  4. Select Chinese Simplified from the Language Script menu.
  5. Select a font type from the Webpage font list.
  6. Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
  7. Click the OK button to close the Internet Options dialog box.

Using the Author Index

When using the Author Index, the product may return more records than what is reported in the Records column. For example, suppose the Record column displays 100 records for the name Simon. If you run this search, the product is likely to retrieve more than 100 records because the product finds records for Simon, Simon A, Simon AC, and so on.

When searching for a particular author, try to restrict your search by also entering topic terms and/or publication names.

Note: This issue only occurs when you select names from the Author Index that do not contain initials. For example, Simon AB will retrieve the actual number of records that appear in the Records column.

Creating Citation Alerts

If you create a citation alert for a record in one database, but you have already created a citation alert for the same record in another product database, only one instance of the record will appear on your My Cited Articles list. If you click the title link, you will go to the Full Record in the database where you first created the alert.

Searching for Names and Addresses that are Booleans

To search on a name or an address that is a Boolean (AND, OR, NOT, and SAME), enclose the name in quotation marks (for example, "Same Day Surg Unit").

Faceted Navigation in ISI Web of Knowledge

ISI Web of Knowledge now employs faceted subject classification that allows you to navigate all of its content. You can now switch easily between searching and browsing, using your own terminology for searching, and the new faceted classification scheme for browsing and refining results.

This design enables subject browsing across diverse content with the ability to drill down to more specific concepts by facet or category. Following a search, only populated categories are displayed with an indication of the number of items within each facet. The subject navigation in ISI Web of Knowledge, as in taxonomic navigation, guides you by showing you available categories, but it does not require you to browse through a hierarchy, which may not accurately reflect the search results.
