Citation Alerts

Keep up to date with the information that matters to you. By setting up search and citation alerts via email or RSS (Rich Site Summary) feeds, you can stay up to date on recently published research and see who is citing your work.

When you create a citation alert, you will receive an e-mail whenever a new publication cites a previously published work. Alerts are active for one year. You may renew an alert at any time.

You create a citation alert by clicking the Create Citation Alert button from a Full Record page within any product in your subscription. This button only appears if you have a subscription to Web of Science Core Collection.

For each record on the list, you will find the following information.


Author / Title

Each author and article title is linked to the Full Record of the work.


Times Cited

The Times Cited number shows the number of citing articles currently in the database for the particular record.


RSS Feed

To set up an RSS feed:

  1. Click the RSS Feed button to go to a Web page that displays the name of the selected journal.

  2. Click the Subscribe to this feed link to open a dialog box.

  3. From the Subscribe to this Feed dialog, click the Subscribe button.

Your RSS reader will automatically report new citing articles. You do not need to renew the alert in order to continue to receive RSS feeds.


Alert Status

This column shows the status of the e-mail alert. If the status is Off, and you wish to turn it on, then click the Renew button.

If the status is On, the expiration date will display. Click the Renew button to renew the alert for one year beyond the displayed date.


Alert Options

Specify the e-mail address to receive the e-mail and an e-mail format. Use a semicolon (;) and a space to separate multiple e-mail addresses. The default value for this field is your registration / sign-in e-mail address.

The format of Alert Options is Plain Text.


Renew Button

Alerts have three states: On Off, and Expired.

Click the Renew button to renew On and Expired alerts and to renew the expiration date of active alerts. Once you click the button, the Alerting status for Expired alerts changes to On and the expiration date is six months in the future from the current date.


Delete Button

Select the check box of any title you wish to remove from the list, and then click Delete. To clear the entire list, click the Select All button, and then click Delete.

Use this feature when your Cited Articles list is full and you cannot add another item to the list.


E-mail Formats

Plain Text

An ASCII text file.


Hypertext Markup Language. This format is suitable for display by a Web browser.


A field-delimited format that can be imported directly into a reference management applications such as:

  • EndNote®
  • Reference Manager®
  • RefWorks
  • Sente
  • Biblioscape

Field Tagged

A field-delimited format suitable for use with reference management applications such as:

  • EndNote
  • Reference Manager

If you use one of these products, we recommend that you select the Field Tagged format to simplify the import process.

To view your Cited Articles list, you must be a registered user and you must sign in.


About Citation Alerts

This feature may not be available at your institution. It requires a subscription to Web of Science Core Collection. If it is not available, contact your System Administrator for more information.


What is a RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary (also known as Really Simple Syndication).

RSS is a content delivery vehicle also known as a web feed. Data is in XML format. Content distributors publish frequently updated news and other Web content in many places on the Web. Users can subscribe to an RSS feed and receive the updated content as it is published. RSS feeds can include full or summarized text and metadata such as publishing dates and author names.
