Times Cited Count

The All Databases Citation Summary table displays the number of times the title at the top of the page was cited by other items from Web of Knowledge product databases.

Duplicate records across the four citation indexes are only counted once. However, a record of a document can appear in multiple product databases. The four citation indexes include:

  • Web of Science
  • BIOSIS Citation Index
  • Chinese Science Citation Database
  • Data Citation Index

The Citation Summary table breaks down citation counts from across all products and editions in Web of Knowledge. This count is seen from wherever you are in the world. We keep this value consistent across all our citation databases. Be aware that it may include citation counts from product databases not in your institution's subscription.

How We Count Citing Publications

We count citations from the reference list in journals, conference proceedings, book series, data sets, and other papers that are indexed in:

  • Web of Science
  • BIOSIS Citation Index
  • Chinese Science Citation Database
  • Data Citation Index

Citing article counts are for all years and all citation indexes in the three citation databases - not just for the current year limits and indexes included in your subscription (which may be smaller).

Moreover, we do not count the same reference (duplicate cites) more than once from a single source. For instance, if an author cites a paper five times in the body of an article (abbreviated in-text citations), we only process and count a reference once.

The methodology for calculating the Times Cited count is applied for all records and for all subscriptions. If you view Times Cited for a record from anywhere in the world, the value is always the same.

Times Cited Count - Results and Full Record Page Count

The number of citing articles you can view on the Citing Articles page may be smaller than the number listed in the Times Cited count on the Results and Full Records pages if your institution's subscription does not include all years and all citation indexes.

Footnotes and Endnotes

We will process and count citations in footnotes and endnotes, but we only count a citation once regardless of whether it appears in both a footnote and in a reference list.

English and Non-English Citations

Some citations may be presented in both English and also in another language within the same reference list. These are known as duplicate citations. As a rule, we provide the English citation provided it has the same amount or more information than the foreign citation.

Source Articles and Cited Articles

Keep in mind the difference between source articles and cited articles. Source articles are from journals that we have indexed in the product. Every source article has a Full Record that you can access if you have a subscription to that product database.

Some examples of source records include:

  • Cited references that can be expanded on the Cited Reference Search page that have a View Record link are source records.

  • Forward Only citations in a Citation Map are source records.

  • Backward Only citations in a Citation Map may include source records and non-source cited articles.

Times Cited Link

The Times Cited link that appears on the Results, Full Record, and Cited References pages takes you to a Citing Articles page for the product database that you are currently searching.

The Times Cited link that appears in the right-hand column of a Full Record includes the Times Cited count from across all Web of Knowledge citation indexes. The link takes you to the All Databases Citing Articles page.

Access to records is limited to your institution's subscription.
