Results

This page displays the results of your search in an abbreviated record format. The left-hand column of the page contains the search statement that retrieved the results along with the number of results that the search retrieved. Click the More link to view the selected time span and any selected data restrictions such as document types and languages.

All bibliographic records that appear on the Results page are source records. Source records are from items (journals, books, conferences, and patents) that we have indexed in a product. Every source record has a Full Record that you can access. Moreover, you can add every source record to your Marked List.

Open Access

Open access status is provided across the Web of Science platform as a result of a partnership with ImpactStory, a not-for-profit organization that recently launched oaDOI, a knowledgebase of Open Access (OA) content. This knowledgebase makes it possible to discover and link to legal Gold (journal level), Hybrid Gold (open content in an otherwise paywalled journal), and Green (author self-archived) OA content. This partnership improves discoverability and access to article-level OA content by not only adding more links to OA content, but also by prioritizing the links to the best version of OA content when multiple versions of an article are available.

The OA status of a document can be one of the following:.

  • Gold: A freely accessible final version of an article. Consult the copyright owner for any re-use or licensing requests. Articles are located at a publisher website in one of the following:
    • A journal that publishes only open access articles.
    • A journal that allows individual authors to pay an article-processing charge for their research to be open access in an otherwise subscription-based journal.
    • A journal that allows archival content to be open access after a period of time.
  • Green: A freely accessible version of an article located in a subject-based repository such as PubMed Central or in an institutional repository. This version of the article may vary from a peer-reviewed accepted manuscript to the final published version based on the journal’s policies. Because the accepted manuscript may vary from the final published version, they are labelled distinctly as Green Accepted and Green Published respectively.
  • No: Only subscribers may access the full-text of the article.

A key advantage of the partnership with oaDOI is the ability to prioritize the open access links so the user sees the version of record at the publisher’s site first, followed by the final version at a repository, and then the accepted manuscript at the repository last. Only one open access link is provided.

The OA status allows researchers to find more full-text articles by clicking on the following links:

  • Free Full Text from Publisher (Gold)
  • Free Published Article from Repository (Green Published)
  • Free Accepted Article from Repository (Green Accepted)
  • Full Text from Publisher (may require a payment)

Users may refine search results to identify these open access articles to ensure they can read the articles regardless of their library’s holdings.

These values are also available for export as part of the full record.

Web of Science Records

Only records in your product subscription will appear in the results set. For example, if you have a subscription to Web of Science Core Collection, then you will see records from this product. However, you will not see records from other products such as BIOSIS Citation Index.

In general, a source record that appears in more than one product database will only appear once on the Results page. However, you may see duplicate records for the same source item if the record has:

  • An anonymous author
  • A different first author
  • A patent number whose format varies from product to product

index

All Databases Full Records

Click the title link of any record to view the Full Record. At the top of the Full Record page, the system will identify the product from where the record originates. For example:

Record from Web of Science Core Collection

If your institution subscribes to multiple products, such as Web of Science Core and BIOSIS Citation Index, then the name of the product that has precedence within your subscription service will appear at the top of the Full Record.

However, you can view the article of the same title in another database if you have a subscription to the database. Go to the Additional Information section in the right-hand column, and then click the product's link. In many instances, you may find different field information in that product.

Refine Results Panel

Select one or more check boxes to limit results to records that match the selected criteria. For example, if you select a publication year and a research area, you will generate a subset of the results list consisting of of items that 1) were published in the specified year and 2) belong to the selected research area.

Note that all of the criteria except ESI Top Papers and Open Access are bibliographic record fields. For example, Countries/Regions refers to countries or regions in author addresses, not to countries or regions where research studies were conducted.

Why are English-language Records Retrieved when I Search in Chinese?

Sometimes an English record will appear on the Results page after you perform an All Databases search and your query is in Chinese. This occurs because the English record comes from a product database that has a higher precedence than the same record from the Chinese Science Citation Database.

For example, you perform an All Databases search entering Chinese characters for the journal title. The search returns an English record from Web of Science Core Collection instead of retrieving the same record from the CSCD database. Why? Because the record from Web of Science Core has a higher precedence than the record from the Chinese Science Citation Database.

If you wish to view the same record from the Chinese Science Citation Database:

  1. Click the title of record that appears in the Results list to go to the Full Record page.

  2. Click the View Citation Data link that appears in the right-hand column under the "View this record in other databases" heading.

  3. The product takes you from the Full Record in Web of Science Core to the same record in the Chinese Science Citation Database where you can view the record in both Chinese and English.

Designating Administrator Access

An administrator is an individual with a ResearcherID account who is associated with an organization or institution. The designated person can perform administrative activities within ResearcherID and utilize the ResearcherID upload web service. An administrator may be granted proxy access to the ResearcherID accounts of other researchers at your institution in order to manage and update their accounts.

For information on how to become an administrator for ResearcherID, refer to the FAQ How Do I get Access to Researcher ID Upload.
