New Features and Announcements

Open Access

Open access status is provided across the Web of Science platform as a result of a partnership with Impactstory, a not-for-profit organization that recently launched a knowledgebase of Open Access (OA) content. This knowledgebase makes it possible to discover and link to legal Gold or Bronze (free content at a publisher's website) and Green (e.g., author self-archived in a repository) OA versions. This partnership improves discoverability and access to article-level OA versions not only by adding more links to OA content, but also by prioritizing the links to the best version of OA content when multiple versions of an article are available. Always consult the copyright owner for any re-use or licensing requests. You can learn more about OA on Web of Science at http://info.clarivate.com/openaccess.

The OA status of a document can be one of the following:.

  • Gold: A freely accessible final version of an article. Articles are located at a publisher website in one of the following:
    • A journal that publishes only open access articles.
    • A journal that allows individual articles to be open access in an otherwise subscription-based journal.
  • Bronze: A freely accessible final version of an article on a publisher's website. These items may reflect archival or promotional content as well as content that the publisher chooses to make free-to-read for the public good. Bronze OA on Web of Science can contain free-to-read copyrighted "public access" versions and free-to-read versions where license information was unidentifiable.
  • Green: A freely accessible version of an article located in a subject-based repository such as PubMed Central or in an institutional repository. This version of the article may vary from a peer-reviewed accepted manuscript to the final published version based on the journal’s policies. Because accepted manuscripts may vary from the final published versions, they are labelled distinctly as Green Accepted and Green Published, respectively.

A key advantage of the partnership with Impactstory is the ability to prioritize the open access links so the user sees the version of record at the publisher’s site first, followed by the final version at a repository, and then the accepted manuscript at the repository last. Only one open access link is provided.

Users may refine search results to identify these open access articles to ensure they can read the articles regardless of their library’s holdings.

The following OA values are available as part of the export of the full record

  • Gold – for items from journals that are identified as fully Gold by the DOAJ and that are available at the publisher’s website
  • Gold or Bronze – for items that are Hybrid Gold or Bronze (“public access”) and that are available at the publisher’s website
  • Green Published – for items that reflect the published version of an article that is available from a repository
  • Green Accepted – for items that reflect the accepted version of an article that is available from a repository

Refining Results for Open Access

The Web of Science Refine Results panel offers two methods to filter a set of search results to show only Open Access content.

Using the Open Access filter in the primary "Filter Results by" panel near the top left of the Search Results Summary page will limit search results to all items identified as Open Access of any type.

The Refine Results panel on the left also allows users to refine by the type of OA:

  • "All Open Access" will limit search results to all items identified as Open Access of any type.
  • "Gold or Bronze" will limit search results to all items identified as either Gold (of any type) or Bronze ('public access'). These publications will be identified with a link to access "Free Full Text from Publisher."
  • "Green Published" will limit search results to all items identified with a link to access "Free Published Article from Repository."
  • "Green Accepted" will limit search results to all items identified with a link to access "Free Accepted Article from Repository."

Analyze Results Redesign

A new intuitive visual analysis experience that makes it easy to grasp trends in large data sets at a single glance has been introduced. Users may interact with the visualization to provide more or less detail about the dataset or change the style of the visualization. To learn more about the data, users may click thru the visualization to see the specific records. Once complete, users may export the visualization to illustrate impact in a grant or tenure application.

Find Research Data

Research data is now discoverable within the Web of Science! Researchers may search for articles related to their topic within Web of Science Core Collection and then filter the results to find data available for re-use to reproduce to build on published results. Simply click on the Associated Data from the refine panel. Note: Only available for subscribers who have access to Data Citation Index.

Modify Settings: Auto-Suggest Publication Names (Caution)

Selecting the Chinese language as the search language in All Databases or the Chinese Science Citation Database automatically turns off the auto suggestion setting in all silo product databases in Web of Science. The OFF option will actually appear in the Auto-Suggest Publication Names box in all product.

To turn back on the auto suggestion feature, you must first select English or Auto Select as the search language in Modify Settings. Next, you must set the Auto-Suggest feature to ON. Once this happens, the ON option will appear in the Auto-Suggest box in all product databases.

You can go to Web of Science Core Collection and other product databases and manually turn on Auto-Suggestions.

Adding Records to Your EndNote Account

To use this feature, you must be a registered user of Web of Sciencce and you must sign in.

If you are not signed in after you select the record(s) to add to your EndNote account, the system prompts you to sign in after you click the EndNote link. The system then returns you to the Results or Full Record page from where you will have to re-submit your records to your EndNote library.
