About the Search Language

In selecting a search language, you select an index to search. For example, if you select English and search the Author field, the system will search the index that contains English-language author names. It will not search the index that contains Chinese-language names.

If Auto-select is the setting, the system will 1) detect the language of the search term(s) and then 2) search the appropriate index. For example:

To find all records in which either 马远良 or MA Yuanliang is an author, perform two searches. Then go to Search History and combine the two search sets using the OR operator:

Most of the English-language content in Chinese Science Citation Database derives from translations of Chinese-language content. However, there are records that contain only English-language content. In this case, there are seven records in the database in which the author name MA Yuanliang appears but the name  马远良 does not appear.

Keep in mind that the name MA Yuanliang may appear in the author list in records from databases aside from Chinese Science Citation Database. Consequently, the  search Author: (MA Yuanliang) executed in Chinese Science Citation Database may retrieve fewer records than the same search executed in All Databases.

Implied AND in Search Queries

AND logic is applied to English-language search terms separated by a space. These are equivalent searches:

  • TITLE: (ocean earthquake)
  • TITLE: (ocean AND earthquake)

By contrast, implied-AND logic does not apply to Chinese-language queries.

These are not equivalent searches:

  • TITLE: (海洋 地震) returns records where 海洋 and 地震 are adjacent in a title.
  • TITLE: (海洋 AND 地震) returns records where 海洋 and 地震 both appear in a title. The terms need not be adjacent.
