Stopwords

Stopwords are common, frequently used words such as articles (a, an, the), prepositions (of, in, for, through), and pronouns (it, their, his) that cannot be searched as individual words in the Topic and Title fields. If you include a stopword in a phrase, the stopword is interpreted as a word placeholder.

Examples

pH of soil finds every record that contains pH and soil anywhere in a Topic field. For example:

pH of soil;
pH and soil;
pH alluvial soil;
soil pH;
and so on.

The system ignores the word "of" because it is a stopword.

vitamin A finds every record that contains the word vitamin in a Topic field. The letter "A" is ignored.

Publication Name Searches

In a search by Publication Name, stopwords are recognized as words, and therefore, may be used in a search query.
