About the Interface Language

In selecting a search language, you select an index to search. For example, if you select English and search the Author field, the system will search the index that contains English-language author names. It will not search the index that contains Chinese-language names.

Many scientific terms and abbreviations always appear in English. For example: DNA, PCR, RAPD, and NaCl. These are included in indexes of Chinese-language fields as well as indexes of English-language fields. To be comprehensive, you should perform two searches. For example:

index

Search 1

Topic: DNA

Author: Chinese Author Name

Search: Chinese

Search 2

Topic: DNA

Author: Wang J*

Search: English

Implied AND in Search Queries

Remember the following search rules when you select Chinese as the search language.

  • When Chinese is selected as the search language, and English terms are used in a search query, there is an implied AND Boolean when a space is used between English terms.

  • When Chinese is selected as the search language, and Chinese characters are used in a search query, there is no implied AND Boolean when a space is used between Chinese characters.

Examples

The following examples demonstrate how the product database returns record counts when Chinese is selected as the search language and when English terms and Chinese characters are formulated in a Topic search query.

Topic = (DNA beta) 2,363 records are returned - implied AND used

Topic = (DNA AND beta) 2,363 records are returned

DNA Search 1

DNA Search 2

DNA Search 3

Note: The number of records that are returned in these examples are subject to change as the number of records in the product database changes.
